Overthinking? Here’s How to Hit Pause

Ever find yourself stuck in a loop of “what ifs” and “should haves”? Overthinking can leave you feeling drained, anxious, or stuck in decision paralysis. But the good news is, you can take small steps to break the cycle.

Here’s how to start:

Step 1: Name it
Recognise when your mind is spinning. Simply noticing that you’re overthinking can take some power away from it. Say to yourself, “Ah, my mind is stuck in a loop again.” Naming it creates awareness, and awareness is the first step toward change.

Step 2: Take a 2-minute “brain break”
Give your mind a short pause. Stretch, walk around, step outside for some fresh air, or grab a glass of water. Even two minutes away from your thoughts can help your brain reset and make space for clarity.

Step 3: Jot it down
Writing down your worries or thoughts helps you transfer them out of your head. Once they’re on paper, your brain often feels a little lighter, and you can start to see patterns, solutions, or things you don’t need to worry about.

Extra Tip: Challenge your thoughts gently. Ask yourself:

  • “Is this something I can change right now?”
  • “Am I imagining the worst-case scenario?”
This can help prevent your mind from spiralling further.

Remember, overthinking doesn’t have to control your day. By pausing, observing, and putting your thoughts on paper, you give yourself a moment of clarity and calm. Over time, these small steps can make a big difference in how often you feel “stuck” in your head.
